On those elements we can distinguish three families: Feldspathic sand, Pegmatite and Feldspar. A further distinction can be made between sodium, potassium and mixed feldspars, depending on the type of alkali they contain.
The feldspars are a group of minerals that have similar characteristics due to a similar structure. All feldspars have low symmetry, being only monoclinic, 2/m, to triclinic, bar 1. They tend to twin easily and one crystal can even be multiply twinned on the same plane, producing parallel layers of twinned crystals.
This investigation was undertaken with the purpose of developing a method for the alteration of feldspars, which, except for the acceleration by higher temperatures, would more nearly simulate natural conditions than had previous methods. HAFNER LAVES and () studied monocline alkali feldspars that show monoclinic behaviour on both optical inspection and X-ray investigation.
Still some of these crystals showed large axial angles, i.e., larger than 44', a property generally pointing to a triclinic structure according to MARFUNIN (). For a routine investigation of feldspars in thin sections such a light source is not necessary.
